Dinnertime
By Jaelyn Gillett

The table is covered with a plastic, disposable cloth
The delectable food steams on the stove
While children are rushing to find
Their grubby clothes to wear at dinnertime
This is not an ordinary meal
For when you are seated
There will be no plates or utensils
We all eat like orphans
The food is slopped before us
Noodles and sauce,
Beans smothered in butter,
Delightful breadsticks
All waiting to be devoured
On Mom's command, we all dig in
Some gracefully pick each noodle
Some scoop it by the handfuls, shoveling it in
Others use only their mouths to slurp and inhale
Until there are no remains
Except for...
Sauce and butter mixed with grainy parmesan cheese
Dripping down each chin
Invading each and every fingernail
There's no need to pick-up
The table has been licked clean
Rip off the cloth and find the trash
Now...
It's off to the bath!!!
(That's one of her family memories that she recorded as a poem. What a kookie Mom she has!
I love the detail. Can't you taste it, and feel it? We might need to do that again soon, it is fun!)
